Nest craft

We found a nest on the ground the other night and the kids were wondering what made it. They decided on a field mouse since birds probably wouldn’t build their nest on the ground. Just one of the wonderful topics that come up while walking in nature. The kids wanted to make their own nest so we broke out the clay and got to work.

You will need:
Air Dry Clay
Twigs
Leaves
Grass
Bark

You could add things like Feathers, Pine needles, Shredded Paper, Flowers etc.

This is our second time making air dry clay bird nests. Our first time we picked bark off of logs. This time we asked the chickens for some of their feathers too! Thanks ladies. We also collected sticks, grass and straw.

We started with a ball of clay and worked it into a nest by using our thumbs to pinch from the middle. We kept pinching and smoothing it until we felt it was a good shape. Then we added our sticks, grass, feathers and straw.

As they put together their nests, we talked about how birds use the bigger sticks on the outside to hold it together and softer materials for the center.

So proud of their masterpieces!

When they finished, we headed out to the trail and found a tree to put their nests in. They check them each morning to see if any birds are using them.
