Gingerbread House

There’s something magical about the smell of ginger, the sticky mess of royal icing and the endless possibilities that come with creating gingerbread houses. As a family tradition, it’s not just about assembling walls and roofs – it’s about building memories, laughter and a whole lot of sugary joy. The only rule for making gingerbread houses is to HAVE FUN and embrace the delicious chaos together!

Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick. Lay the template on the dough and cut it with a knife or pizza cutter.

Place the pieces on parchment paper. Make sure they have enough space. They will puff up in the oven. Cook for about 12 minutes at 350°f. The pieces should be golden with light brown edges. They will harden as they cool.

I put Brown Paper Table Cloth on the table before we started decorating. This made clean up SUPER EASY.

I found these super cute Santa, Reindeer and Christmas Lights candies which totally stepped up our gingerbread house game. I found colorful pearl sixlets, a TOTALLY AWESOME christmas sprinkle assortment, Dots & M&Ms at Wal-Mart.

Make Perfect Royal Icing and glue your house together. I started with the front and supported it with a side. Be sure to glue from the inside as well. After you get the bottom pieces together, wait until the icing is hard and sturdy before adding the roof so it doesn’t collapse. This icing is so awesome. I’ve never had any collapsing or sagging.

Start decorating! We went with the classic colorful gingerbread house theme.

I gave Little Bro the doors to the houses instead of using them. He liked building his own masterpiece… and then eating it.

I absolutely LOVE how the icing decorations look on the big gingerbread house. They really make it POP.

2020

This year, I decided to hide our gingerbread pieces in the oven overnight so that little children, or dogs, couldn’t get into them. I forgot to tell the rest of the household that they were in there. Learn from my mistake! Don’t hide gingerbread in the oven overnight!!
