Microwave Puffy Paint

What’s cooler than painting? Putting your painting into the microwave and watching it grow! We had lots of fun making these microwave puffy paint! The kids loved feeling the texture of their masterpieces. It was also a great opportunity to practice measuring with measuring cups and spoons.

You will need:
Flour
Salt
Baking Powder
Water
Food Coloring

Zip Lock bags or Condiment Bottles
Paper Plates or paper
Measuring Cups and Spoons

Instructions:

  1. Measure 1 cup of flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add a little water to make a paste. You don’t want the mixture too thick nor too runny. Ours was just a bit too runny. Add a little water at a time and mix until you have a smooth paste. We used a wisk to get through all the clumps.

3. Separate the mixture into zip lock baggies, piping bags or squeeze bottles and add 2-3 drops of food coloring. Mix it up!

4. Use a rubber band or zip tie to tie off the ends of the zip lock bags, pushing the mixture to one corner.

5. Snip a tiny bit off the corner and start creating!

*I put a layer of plastic wrap over the Flisat table before we started. This made cleanup SO easy. I only had to wash hands!*

6. Microwave for 30-45 seconds (or until mixture is dry to the touch).

We made volcanoes! The kids have been very into volcanoes lately – volcano shaped food, volcano pretend play and now volcano microwave puffy paint!

We talked about the colors, texture and the science behind baking powder and how it makes the puffy paint rise when cooked.

They were super proud of their volcanoes! We kept these for 1-2 days so the kids could show their family what they made and how they did it. I will definitely be doing this again with them soon. It was really not as messy as I expected and we had a lot of fun!
