Master New Vocabulary Words With This Writing Activity

My daughter is a determined and self-motivated learner who constantly seeks new challenges. Recently, she expressed an interest in improving her spelling and word writing skills. In response, we developed an exciting activity that combines reading, vocabulary, and writing into one exercise. This is an excellent way to engage with multiple aspects of language learning and encourage a love of words.

  • Pick out 4 flash card words. We use TREND flash cards (see below). I like that they are simple and have a sentence on the back with an example of how the word is used.
  • Write each word on the blank lines (the ones without a number).
  • Go over each word with your child and have them write it 5 times under the word you wrote. Have your child go slow and take care to write each letter exactly how it’s supposed to be written. You can have this Letter Formation Chart handy so they can glance at it if they are struggling to form a letter the correct way.
  • When they are finished, have them glance over there words one more time before taking the paper away.
  • Give your child a blank piece of paper and have them write each word without looking. Hopefully they remembered how to spell it and how the word is written! If not, try again!

You can use regular lined paper for this but I prefer to use 1/2 inch lined paper with middle guidelines for proper letter formation. I made 2 sheets specifically for this vocabulary word practice.

By regularly practicing vocabulary words and writing, your students will not only improve their spelling and language skills, but also develop a better understanding and appreciation of words.
