Snölykta – A Swedish Snow Lantern
While our winter tradition in the US is snowmen and snow forts, in Sweden, children learn to make snow lanterns called snölykta. You need the perfect packing snow to make snowballs strong enough to hold one of these pyramids together and today, we had exactly that! I was so excited to get the kids outside and attempt a beautiful snölykta.
Start by making a flat circle where you want your lantern. Then make a bunch of snowballs! Place them in a circle on the ground and build up from there. We used snow glue (loose snow) to fill any cracks we felt might cause them to cave in.
Slowly bring each level of snowballs in a bit more to create a cone look. Before you finish the top, fill the snölykta with lights! We used a string of white Christmas lights. Candles or lanterns would work too!
Then, cover the top with more snowballs!
