Popcorn Garland

Day 6 of our 25 Crafts of Christmas is a true classic holiday tradition. Miss 4 and I have been having a lot of fun making our own decorations this year. 4 is that magical age where they can really be involved with decorating and crafting. Before this year, it was a lot of “be careful”s and “stop!”s. Now I can finally say, “come help me” or in this case, take “this needle and thread the popcorn!” Of course, she was super excited to use a needle. Here’s how we made our Popcorn Garland.

You will need:
Popcorn kernels (preferably not prepackaged popcorn)

Needle – we used a yarn needle. It broke a lot of popcorn and definitely added some frustration. A thinner needle with a large eye would be best.

Thread – we used embroidery thread. Fishing line would work great too. I was worried my regular thin thread would break.

Cranberries – I didn’t have cranberries. We used candied strawberries. They look pretty but were very sticky and tough to thread!
-An idea I thought of later was pony beads! How cute would that be?! If you try this be sure to tag #raisinghooks so I can see! I think we will try that next year but for now, I’ve had my fill of popcorn garland!

A button -optional

We eat popcorn like it’s our job in this house but prefer a healthier option over bagged popcorn. We buy organic popcorn kernels and pop them in a pot on the stove with a tiny bit of oil. If that sounds too daunting, you could put 1/4 cup of kernels into a brown bag and microwave them just like regular popcorn. This is definitely cheaper and also not a buttery mess.

She insisted she do this in her bed while staring at her tree.

I put a large button at the end of the thread so the popcorn didn’t slide off. It also gave me a sturdy place to hold up the garland. I really thanked myself for doing that when we finished. After re-threading the needle a few times, I put a small knot so the thread didn’t slide through. It made it a bit tougher to thread the popcorn but was overall less frustrating than re-threading the needle a ton of times!

Thread through the thickest part of each popcorn piece. If you thread it through the “wing”, it breaks off very easily.

I love the way the popcorn garland looks on the tree next to our Pony Bead Ornaments. Definitely a classic for a reason!

She made another small one to line her decorations on her dresser. It looked really cute until her brother yanked it down and stomped on all of the popcorn pieces!
